Spring Term Overview

This term our topic is Toys! We have been having fun bringing in and talking about our favourite toys and some of our presents from Christmas.  We've been discussing which materials they are made from and what they can do.  We are now enjoying finding out about toys from the past and learning about how materials and technologies have developed over time to enable our toys to do so many different things nowadays!  In Dance, we are using the theme of 'toy box'  to create some imaginative work based on how toys might move if they were to come alive, accompanied by some lovely music from the Nutcracker. Next we will be following the toys theme in our writing, starting by looking at robots, designing and making our own robots, and then writing instructions so that someone else could make a similar one.  We are looking forward to having a teddy bear's picnic in a few weeks' time and making some sandwiches for us all to eat and enjoy! We will be using stories about teddy bears to prompt creative writing.   We are also looking forward to some of our grandparents coming in and talking to us about the toys they used to play with when they were little, and to our workshop with Haslemere Museum.   Our recorder playing is going well and we are learning to play our first proper tune with notes A and B! We look forward to sharing this with you soon!

Autumn Term 2 2019 Overview

The second half of the term has seen us moving on to our Houses and Homes topic.  We started this topic with a fun filled day at the Rural Life Centre in Tilford, where we got to see and experience life in a wide range of homes from the past, including a Victorian home and a post war prefab.  We enjoyed workshops such as 'a Victorian wash day', and were even lucky enough to have a taster of a Victorian school day! We couldn't believe how different schools were back then compared with now! We were quite relieved to pull back up in the coach at Grayswood at the end of the day, back to our colourful classroom with all its toys and games and learning resources! Quite different from the Victorian classroom!  We have been looking at different types of homes and styles of homes and have enjoyed creating our own model dream homes, full of imagination and fun! We are next going to be looking at homes around the world and why they are built a certain way and with particular materials. Materials is our Science topic this half term. We have been practising sorting materials by their properties and uses.  We have had lots of fun looking around school for different materials and have been discussing why these materials have been chosen for the jobs they do.  Our English work this half term has been designed around our topic and we have started off writing about the houses we live in and also our dream homes! We will next be doing lots of work with the The Three Little Pigs story, acting it out, learning the story, mapping the story and retelling the story.  We will be comparing the materials used in the three little pigs' houses too!

Autumn Term 1 2019 Overview

We are beginning this term with our topic on Explorers.  Over the term we will be finding out about the lives of 'significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements', such as Ernest Shackleton and Christopher Columbus.     Our English work this half term is based around stories that link with our Explorer topic.  We will be doing lots of role play and talk for writing, as well as creating art work and models to help us with our writing.  Some of the stories we will be using are: The Gruffalo, Meerkat Mail, Where the Wild Things Are and The Snail and the Whale.  In Science, we will be looking at habitats, linked to our explorer topic.  We will be going on habitat hunts in and around the school and the local area.  In Geography, we will be learning about maps.  We will be following maps of the local area to help us deliver our Harvest biscuits to the right addresses of the members of All Saints' Church! A Grayswood tradition!! We will also be creating maps for the Gruffalo and the Bear from the Bear Hunt, practising using symbols and a simple key.
