February Newsletter

Nestled in the heart of a beautiful Surrey Hills village, our school does look particularly pretty on a frosty winter morning. However, I am pleased to say we are starting to see signs of spring making a welcome appearance.

Despite being the shortest month, February has been as busy as ever for us here with sporting success, fundraising initiatives, our Ash Wednesday church service and more! We hope you enjoy a little round-up of what we have been up to.

Woodpeckers meet a real life superhero

Just before half-term, John Guernier (Ava and Ema’s Dad) came in and told us all about his job as a wildlife conservationist, as part of our learning on 'Superheroes'. He told the children about his work involving animals and taking care of a national reserve in Africa. The children enjoyed looking at the handmade flippers and spear gun! We would like to thank John for taking the time to talk to the class about a job that involves being a hero to the world.

Fundraising continues for Turkey and Syria

We are pleased to report that over £510 was raised from our last MUFTI day. Thanks to the suggestion of our Year 6 School Ambassadors, this will be donated to support families in Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquake earlier this month.

Following on from this, we are arranging a collection of pre-loved clothes with Bag2School. All children will come home with a bag to fill over the next few weeks.

Sporting News

On the 7th February, three Grayswood Football teams from Year 4 and Year 6 participated in the Tillingbourne tournament. Everyone tried their hardest and gave some great performances!

Congratulations to the Year 4 team who were overall Joint Winners of their age group, drawing in the final with Wonersh after extra time.

“We got to the semi-finals, we won 1-0. Finally, we got to the finals! We got to extra time but we decided to end it 0-0, so we still won.”  Rayne YR4

Year 2 Sports Leadership Training

A couple of weeks ago, 8 of our Robins participated in the 'First Steps to Sports Leadership' training.  They had great fun learning the importance of team work, making sure everyone is engaged, exploring ways to warm up the mind and body, and understanding the Mr NEDD principle (name, explain, demonstrate, deliver).

We are very excited to have these budding Year 2 Sports Leaders provide some fun and activity in the playground. Well done to all involved.

The Alternative Daily Mile

On Monday 27th February, we began The Alternative Daily Mile. Taking place in the playground before school, The Sports Crew will lead exercises for 10 minutes as a fun new way to start the day and get our bodies warmed up ready for learning.

Mondays and Wednesdays, Key Stage 2 will take part, with Tuesdays and Thursdays for Reception and Key Stage 1.

Congratulations to some more of our students for their achievements outside of school this month.

Sasha D - managed to swim 1000 metres during a recent event for her swimming academy. Her goal for next year is to double this to 2000 metres.

Eric and Isaac - helped Beacon Hill Football Club lift the winning trophy at a recent football tournament, coming top out of 80 competing teams.
