June 2025

Our value we're focusing on this half term: Forgiveness

Welcome

Welcome to the June edition of the Grayswood CE Primary School Newsletter.

After a few weeks filled with unexpected rain and storms, we finally welcomed the sunshine and were able to host a truly memorable Sports Day earlier this month.

{item_alt_tag}

As parents gathered on our beautiful village green, children took part in a variety of field events, such as an obstacle course, a netball throw and standing long jump. This was then followed by the track events including sprints and relays.

Despite what may have been the hottest Sports Day we have had in recent memory, all children tried their absolute best, putting all of their recent training in PE lessons to very good use. There were also lots of examples of excellent sportsmanship and encouragement of others.

As the event drew to a close, it was time to tally up all the points from the day, with Darwin taking the win, and Huw and Charley proudly being awarded the best 'Sportsman' and 'Sportswoman' of the year. Joining them was Annabelle, winner of our 'Sportmanship' trophy.

One final term for Year 6

It's hard to believe we are already in our final half term of the current academic year, and of course that means it's the final half-term at Grayswood School for our Year 6 Kites class.

To help celebrate and reflect on their time with us, they took part in the Guildford Cathedral Leavers' Service 2025.

{item_alt_tag}

"Shortly after we arrived, we headed to the prayer space where we had time to think about any worries we might have moving forwards. Next we went to the 'regret' station where we washed away our sins using dirty stones before placing them on the cross. Then we made flags to celebrate all we are proud of, before going on to make models of people we are thankful to for helping us during our time at primary school. Finally, we were given a fake train ticket where we filled out where we are coming from and where we are going to."

Year 5 visit Squires Garden Centre

After weeks of caring for their potato plants here at school, Year 5 travelled to Squires Garden Centre to harvest their potatoes and enjoy some yummy chips made freshly from them.

Our thanks to all the team at Squires for providing us with the equipment, the know-how, plus lunch!

Wrens trip to West Wittering

A highlight of the past month for our youngest students was our class trip to West Wittering! The day started out cloudy and very windy but the sun came through and we managed to have a great day out! There was lots of building and playing in the sand, followed by a talk from a lifeguard. We then took a break for lunch and shortly after we went for a paddle in the sea. The water wasn’t as cold as it looked and the children loved jumping over the waves. Once we were all packed up and ready to go, we enjoyed ice lollies before boarding the coach. It was a quiet journey back with many tired and sleepy faces!

Year 5 trip to Haslemere Museum

Our Swifts class had a fantastic trip to Haslemere Museum last week. A big thank you to the parents who joined us and supported the walk to and from the museum.

The children had a wonderfully creative day – they loved making masks and performing the Greek play Heracles and the 12 Labours.

We also enjoyed a sunny outdoor lunch and made full use of the large lawn for playtime.

Grayswood's Got Talent

Last week, the School Ambassadors hosted the much-anticipated final of Grayswood's Got Talent.

With almost 40 acts through to the final, the judging panel had a tough job deciding on a winner. Ultimately however, Alex and Noah with their magic act, and Amelie with her singing, were crowned joint winners, with Leo D and Freddie P joint second, and Bo in third.

"Grayswood's Got Talent was a very enjoyable experience that the whole school loved and the ambassadors will never forget. Hopefully it will carry on, in the memory of our time here at Grayswood."

Year 6 visit to Wintershall

"When Kites class went to Wintershall we had so much fun learning all about the life of Jesus.

It started with telling us about his birth and his first years in the temple before the final act depicted his crucifixion."

Year 6 Ambassadors Visit Redcot Residential Care Home

As well as being behind the inaugural 'Grayswood's Got Talent', this month our Year 6 Ambassadors visited Redcot Residential Care Home in Haslemere for an afternoon of games!

There was a real buzz of conversation as the residents got to grips with the rules of the games and the children listened to stories of their life adventures. A wonderful afternoon was had by all and we thank Redcot for having us!

Swallows 'being the change you want to see'

On Friday 11th July, we are holding a fundraising event after school where the Year 4 students will be organising a bake sale and a couple of other stalls for the charity Acts 435 (run by the Archbishop of York).

They will also be collecting donations for the food bank and pre-loved clothes.

In addition, the children have written to the council about changes they would like to see in the local area, such as picnic benches in the field, a pedestrian crossing by the church, and speed monitoring of traffic! They will also be making some art work to jazz up the local bus shelters, as a way of making a difference to others.

Village Speed Camera Petition

A petition has been created to urge Surrey County Council to consider installing a speed camera to try and reduce the amount of speeding in the 30mph zone of the A286 in the village going past the church.

The Speedwatch group records, on average, one car every two minutes exceeding the speed limit by 20% or more, and the speeds at which cars travel are regularly 40-50mph.

The school fully supports the petition, and encourages parents, families and friends to join us in providing your signature here:  https://chng.it/z6Y2PQp8fz.

Grayswood Fundraises for RNLI

As a thank you for their recent visit to our school to teach us all about water safety, parents very kindly donated a massive £285 to the charity.

During their visit we learnt four main points in the workshop:

1. Stop and think

2. Stay together

3. Float

4. Call 999

We also discussed other hazards around rivers and canals and how to identify a lifeguard.

The workshop leader mentioned that many young children don’t know their parents' mobile numbers in cases of emergencies and that it could be very helpful to learn these over the summer holidays!

Sports News

Confederation Sports

This month saw Grayswood students take part in both KS1 and KS2 Confederation Sports events.

Our children participated in a variety of different events with enthusiasm, demonstrating great teamwork and perseverance.

For a third year running our KS2 students finished on the podium, and we were proud of Mrs Barnes who finished fourth in the teachers' race!

Swimming Gala

On Thursday 5th June, Grayswood KS2 pupils took part in the first confederation swimming gala at Haslemere Leisure Centre. Our team of 35 children competed against other local schools in a variety of different events. We are proud to announce that we came second out of eight, narrowly missing out on the trophy by only 12 points! A huge congratulations to all the children who took part, we are so proud of you and thank you for representing Grayswood so brilliantly!

Class Attendance

Good attendance is not just valuable, it's essential. Good attendance promotes good outcomes for pupils and provides them with the very best opportunity to reach their potential.

We regularly track the attendance for each child and communicate with parents where any concerns may be emerging. The government class attendance below 90% is as 'persistently absent' and under 50% 'severely absent'.

The percentage attendance figures for each class as a whole in June are:

1st.  Robins - 97.94%

2nd. Kites - 97.5%

3rd. Swallows - 95.58%

4th. Wrens - 95.56%

5th. Woodpeckers - 95.48%

6th. Swifts - 95.00%

7th. Kingfishers - 94.51%

Well done Robins on topping the leaderboard for the second month in a row!

Just to remind parents/carers of our attendance policy which came into action in September 2024. If you take your child/children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
