Welcome to the May edition of the Grayswood CE Primary School Newsletter.
We hope you enjoy our recap of just some of the things we have been up to this month!
First of all, we would like to begin by saying a huge congratulations to our Year 6 class on the completion of their SATs.
Thanks to all of their hard work and the support of the Year 6 teaching team, they could not have been better prepared.
To celebrate, children were treated to what has now become a tradition here at Grayswood, a delicious ice cream of their choice!

Year 5 Residential
Our lucky Swifts class have just returned from a sunny 5 days in the beautiful Dorset countryside, at Hooke Court.
Making themselves at home in stunning yurt tents, children were treated to days filled with historical re-enactments, craft, cooking, team-building activities, and of course lots and lots of yummy food and the most memorable times with their friends.
|
|
“Hooke Court was a wonderful place and there was lots to explore. I was not sure what to expect, but it was amazing! The activities were really fun and my favourite part was definitely the night walk because it was a secret and we didn’t know where we were going. We went in the woods and we were told to follow the instructors, we heard lots of screams and then a ‘so called spider landed on my head’ and apparently there was a tiger, but I didn’t believe that!
The instructors were really good and one of them showed us magic tricks which were cool.
I also liked the rockets which we made and we were able to shoot them up in the air.
The food was good and my favourite were the croissants in the morning and delicious raspberry and blackcurrant jam!
We stayed in yurts in groups which were fun and I even got some sleep!
All in all it was the best time I have ever had although I did miss Mrs. O’Rourke and we did talk about trying to fit her in our suitcases!“

VE Day Celebrations!
Earlier this month, the whole school came together to commemorate VE Day.
After a morning filled with themed activities and learning, we all enjoyed a special picnic lunch out on the playground, followed by playtime on our beautiful village green. Thank you to the parent helpers who volunteered their time to supervise the children whilst on the green.

Kings & Queens Workshop
Our Robins were visited by none other than Henry VIII earlier this month, (played by David Smith, a full-time impersonator). His outfit alone cost thousands and some of the events he participates in are quite remarkable. He gave Robins an incredible day, delivering a session which was fit for….erm….a king!
|
|
Beginning with a detailed discussion about a good number of past British monarchs, the children then played a board game of sorts, called ‘Execution’, which in practise was far less fatal than its title implies.
Once done, the children then spent some time creating a clay coin, featuring the head of their chosen king or queen. Following lunch, where King Henry dined with them, they spent an hour or so learning how to dance, Tudor style and really did get into it!
|
|
The day finished with an archery session in the playground
with children ‘hunting’ deer, wild boar, pheasant and rabbit (pictures thereof). It really was a fabulous day and the enthusiasm with which every child got involved in the activities was so good to see.

|
|
Prayer Space
Making the most of the beautiful weather, the children enjoyed a special outdoor prayer space on Tuesday 20th May. Different activities were set up in the playground which allowed the children to pause and reflect on the world around us and consider the impact of current environmental challenges.

Sadly today we bid farewell to our Lunchtime Supervisor Maddy. Maddy has been a part of the Grayswood School family for a number of years, and she'll missed by staff and children alike.

Good attendance is not just valuable, it's essential. Good attendance promotes good outcomes for pupils and provides them with the very best opportunity to reach their potential.
We regularly track the attendance for each child and communicate with parents where any concerns may be emerging. The government class attendance below 90% is as 'persistently absent' and under 50% 'severely absent'.
The percentage attendance figures for each class as a whole in May are:
|
1st. Robins- 99.31%
2nd. Kites - 98.28%
3rd. Woodpeckers - 97.86%
4th. Kingfishers - 97.48%
5th. Wrens - 97.13%
6th. Swallows - 96.84%
7th. Swifts - 96.21%
Well done Robins on topping the leaderboard for May! So close to perfect attendance- one of the most impressive percentages we've had!

Just to remind parents/carers that our new attendance policy will come into action from September 2024. If you take your child/children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:
1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.
Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
