March Newsletter

It’s quite hard to believe we have reached the end of another month and another term here at Grayswood CE Primary School. Time really does fly when you’re having fun!

It was so lovely to see all of our parents here at school for our Parents Evening on Tuesday. A special thank you must go to the wonderful Michelle in the office for a monumental effort in making sure the evening ran smoothly.

With our Year 6 very much focused on preparing for their upcoming SATS, and all of our year groups working on their KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts), the children have continued to delight us here with their hard work and their attitude, and truly deserve a well-earned rest over the coming Easter break.

But, before we say goodbye for a couple of weeks, please do not forget we have an early finish today followed by the FROGs Easter Trail re-located into the school hall. Fingers crossed for some sunny spring weather during the holidays!

We look forward to welcoming all children back to school on Tuesday 18th April.

World Book Week

We turned World Book Day into a full week of celebrating reading this year. We had library challenges, paired reading across different year groups, a dance workshop where the children re-enacted stories through dance, a grandparents reading afternoon, a book fair, a special themed lunch, and of course the ever-popular dress-up day! Lots of fun was had by all!

Year 2 walk in Phillips' Footsteps

Earlier this month, our Robins visited Godalming Museum to consolidate their class learning about the Titanic and carry out some geographical studies of the town. As well as some museum-based activities based around the luggage of passengers and the morse code which Jack Phillips used on board Titanic, the class participated in a guided-walk around the town. They studied the history of some of the older buildings and looked for clues about what the town used to be like. They also walked in the footsteps of Jack Phillips, seeing where he went to school as well as the memorial erected to reflect on his actions on board the sinking ship and ultimate sacrifice he made to ensure as many people as possible were saved.

Year 5 visit to Painshill Park

On Monday 19th March, Year 5 went on a school trip to Painshill Park.

We all really enjoyed the orienteering, learnt lots, and were suitably tired before lunch!

In the afternoon, we took part in a rivers workshop. We played clouds and rivers (learning about the water cycle), we learnt about river features and indications of rivers and finally we made our own river with an island and a king worm, called King Wormie VI. Overall, a fantastic day out (despite the miserable weather)!

Year 4 visit to Priorsfield

Last week, Swallows went to Priorsfield School to learn about sculptures. We had a look at the different sculptures located around the garden. Some were animals, some were abstract and some took human form. Most of the sculptures were made out of different types of metal and stone, but some were sculptured from wood.

After finishing our worksheets and having a snack, we were given some paper to draw our personal favourites. We had to observe carefully and make our drawings as realistic as possible.

We had a really interesting time and learnt a lot about different types of sculptures that exist. Did you know that you too can visit? There is no charge, and you can also buy some of them. Some are more expensive than others!

Year R trip to Merrist Wood

On Thursday 23rd March, Wrens had a fantastic trip to Merrist Wood.  The class were in their element meeting some farmyard animals and feeding the goats and their kids! Inside, we went into the desert rooms to find large tortoise, snakes, lizards and poison dart frogs! Just before it poured with rain, Wrens got to see the Meerkat mob being fed. Thank you to all the parent helpers who joined us on our trip.

Woolmer Hill Orchestra Day

Yesterday we took part in the Woolmer Hill Orchestra Day. Initially we were split into two groups to play, with us both on piano, before all instruments from a range of schools came together for a joint run-through.

After going home for some dinner, we went back to Woolmer Hill School in the evening to put on a concert for all the parents. We played “All About That Bass”, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, and then “Uptown Funk”.

Our favourite part of the day was hearing all the instruments playing together, it was really magical.
