April 2025

Our value we're focusing on this half term: Teamwork

Welcome

Welcome to the April edition of the Grayswood School Newsletter.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter break, and managed to make the most of some of the beautiful weather we were blessed with.

Upon our return to school, we were informed of some incredibly generous donations from our local community. We would like to say a huge 'THANK YOU' to:

  • Arnolds Garage
  • Haslemere Penny Ha'Penny Trust
  • Surrey Gardens Trust School Awards

If you know of any other businesses or charities that could make a donation to the school, please ask them to contact our School Business Manager.

Bikeability

Our Year 4 class took to two wheels last week to complete their Level 1 Bikeability Course.

The morning-long course saw the children learn how to:

{item_alt_tag}

Maintain your cycle: make sure your ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs

Glide: smooth, calm and collected

Control your bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. You’ll even learn to pedal one-handed!

Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control

Be aware of your surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles

Next up, our Year 6 class will work on their Level 2 certification in a few weeks!

Earth Day

The entire school marked Earth Day this month, taking part in a whole range of activities.

Our Year 5 class worked on some posters, highlighting the issues of plastic pollution, which were of such outstanding quality, Miss Cole gave each child a Silver Card!

Woodpecker Litter Pick

Thanks to our Woodpeckers for their efforts this week with their litter picking. It's so wonderful to see the children taking such pride in their school and their hard work is much appreciated!

The children were amazed at how many small pieces of rubbish they could find! On returning to the classroom, they each wrote a recycling acrostic poem.

Swallows get inventive!

Over the last few weeks, our Swallows class have been learning about the impact humans have on the environment. They focused on water pollution and followed the journey of Freddie the Fish through his home – the river.

As Freddie swam downstream, the children watched how the clean water slowly became dirty because of things people had put into it – like rubbish, soap, oil, and chemicals. Poor Freddie found it harder to swim and breathe as the water got more and more polluted.

The children really enjoyed the activity and had lots of fun, but they also understood the serious message behind it: water pollution is harmful to fish, animals, and people too.

We also talked about what we can do to help keep rivers and oceans clean. Here are some of the children’s ideas:

  • Always put rubbish in the bin – never on the ground or near water
  • Recycle plastic so it doesn’t end up in rivers or the sea
  • Tell friends and family why it’s important to keep water clean

And here are a few pictures of poor Freddie as he swam along the river and the water changed around him…

Kingfishers Travel Through Time

"On Thursday 24th April, we walked through the forest from school to the Haslemere Museum.

When we were there, we learnt about the process of mummification, including how they fed the brains to a cat. Really interestingly, we saw a real mummy and its coffin!

All the class brought in small teddies and in the afternoon we attempted to mummify them. Don't worry, no teddies were harmed in the process!

Everyone agreed this was a fun and fascinating trip!"

Staff News

A big welcome to Mrs Davies, who has joined our staff team this term, covering Year R whilst Mrs Woods is on maternity leave. Mrs Davies has loved her first week with our Wrens and is very much looking forward to the year ahead.

In other news, Mrs Harris is expecting a baby in the Autumn term. We have successfully recruited this week for a teacher to cover Mrs Harris whilst she is off and will provide further details on what the staff team will look like for September after May half term.

Class Attendance

Good attendance is not just valuable, it's essential. Good attendance promotes good outcomes for pupils and provides them with the very best opportunity to reach their potential.

We regularly track the attendance for each child and communicate with parents where any concerns may be emerging. The government class attendance below 90% is as 'persistently absent' and under 50% 'severely absent'.

The percentage attendance figures for each class as a whole in April are:

1st.  Kingfishers - 98.95%

2nd. Robins - 95.91%

3rd. Wrens - 95.00%

4th. Woodpeckers - 94.67%

5th. Swifts - 94.24%

6th. Kites - 94.09%

7th. Swallows - 93.28%

Well done Kingfishers on topping the leaderboard for April!

Just a reminder to parents/carers of our attendance policy. If you take your child/children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

What is METACOGNITION and why is it important for all learners?

Metacognition is:- “thinking about thinking”

It is the knowledge and understanding of what we know and how we think, including the ability to regulate our thinking as we work on a task.

Why is it important?

- It shapes children to become active learners rather than passive learners.

- Gives children ownership, control and greater motivation over their own learning.

- Children are aware of the learning process and how they learn.

- Helps to promote thinking and deeper learning / mastery skills.

How do you support your child to use metacognition?

Questions should be:

•        Open-ended

Give your child some space to reflect on their thinking: Can you tell me more about why you think that?

•        Non-blaming

It can be hard to stay open when children are acting out, but asking them to think about their behaviour can help them learn to manage difficult situations in a better way: Why do you think you got so upset when Dad changed the channel?

•        Solution-focused

Encourage them to think about how they can use their understanding to change things in the future: How could you handle that differently next time?

•        Process-oriented

Ask questions that help your child get a better idea of how their thought process works: How will you know when this drawing is finished?

You may find this video helpful in explaining this further.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVjLhumKKD8

Where to start?

Simply start with a conversation about a real-life problem.  For example, we need to tidy your room. Tell me your ideas about how we could go about it. Part way through tidying assess how it is going. Are we doing this in the best way?  Could we try a different method, for example collecting all of the cars first or putting the books in a pile before putting them back on the shelf? Try a different method.  Discuss how you will do it next time and why.  Next time, before getting started, discuss what you remember about what you learnt the last time you did this job together.

Free Online Courses Available

Surrey County Council are offering some great online courses for families this summer term.

Family Learning courses and workshops are free for parents, carers and grandparents to help you create a better family life. Do you want to help your child or teenager to improve their behaviour, development and learning? If so, a Family Learning course is for you.

Courses are FREE and will be booking fast. Please visit the Surrey CC website for more information.
