Spring 1 and 2 Overview:

For this shorter term, we focus on one topic for the whole 12 weeks, that being 'These Sceptred Isles'. Though not the most obvious title, the learning is all about Britain, the British Isles, the United Kingdom and will allow the children to explore a whole wealth of topics relating to our Country and its past. Already we have looked at the location of key cities around the UK and this will continue over the next few weeks with children finding out about how they came to be, how they were/are developed and the 'role' each is know for. We will also explore the counties of the country, finding out about those we live in or are close to and the natural and man-made features within them. Children will find out about the geographical make-up of the UK, using maps and atlases to identify these and compare them with other countries around the World. Historically, we will look at key periods in British history - it's Empire, the industrial Revolution and key people from its past, to name but a few. Children will find out about what makes Britain Great, looking at inventions, inventors and the development of transport through the ages as well as more 'fun' things such as our national food, customs and traditions.
